This two week unit was designed to provide kindergarten students with an understanding of what a community is and what it means to be a community helper. The class participated in a series of inquiry-based, student-directed lessons that allowed them to learn about six community helpers. Following an introductory lesson on community helpers, the students investigated the roles of teachers, mayors, mail carriers, police officers, doctors, and firefighters in the community. Each student was then given the chance to conduct in-depth research about a worker of their choice, and present their findings on a class wide "Community Day". During this event, each kindergartner had the opportunity to share their learning with their peers, teachers, and families. Ultimately, the Community Helpers unit was a success.
COmmunity Helpers BuLLetin BoardAt the beginning of each lesson, the kindergartners would take a "field trip" to the hallway to the bulletin board. The class would board their imaginary school bus and travel to the building of the community helper being studied on that particular day. This innovative activity get the children excited and eager to participate in each day's lesson!

The Community Helpers Journal
|
At the beginning of each day, the kindergartners completed one page of their Community Helpers' Journal. Each page corresponded with the worker that was studied on the previous day. The students' responses were used as a formative assessment for the teachers to ensure that they were on the first track and modify the lessons accordingly. As well, it was an excellent way to refresh the class' memory and encourage them to be excited for the next lesson.

Community Day
|
As an end of the unit celebration, the class invited their families in for Community Day. The students were able to share their new found knowledge about their chosen community helper and participate in various activities associated to that career. It was a memorable experience for students, teachers, and families alike!
